Olusegun Obasanjo, a former president of Nigeria, says he will distribute hearing aids to 10,000 indigent people in the north-east of the country.
He added that he will begin with Bauchi state, where 2,000 people would benefit.
Punch reports that Obasanjo made the pledge on Sunday at the palace of Rilwanu Suleiman-Adamu, the Emir of Bauchi.
He added that he was only aware that he was suffering from a 25 percent hearing loss after he was examined abroad.

Before then, he had always insisted that his hearing was fine, he said.
He also encouraged more people to embark on medical examinations to ascertain whether they were auditory impaired to a certain degree or not.
“After my result came out, I had to ask the man to also check on my chief security officer then, but shockingly, he was more deaf than I was,” Obasanjo said.

The retired general said the experience informed the establishment of the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation, with “thousands of Nigerians” now benefitting from the foundation’s ear treatments and hearing aids.
