OBITUARY: Yusha’u Abubakar, Boko Haram’s archenemy in the army, dies in car crash

Yushau Mahmood Abubakar, major-general and chief of training and operations of officer of the Nigeria army, has died.

Abubakar, who was the commander of Operation Lafiya Dole in the northeast, which spearheaded the war against Boko Haram, died in a car crash on the  Maiduguri-Damaturu road on Tuesday.

Abubakar was appointed head of Operation Lafiya Dole in August 2015, and he handed over to Hassan Umoru on January 4, 2016 at a colourful ceremony, before honouring his deployment to the army headquarters, Abuja, where he headed the training and operations department.At the occasion, Umoru had praised  Abubakar for his numerous achievements in office, saying: “I want to thank my predecessor for laying a solid foundation; in fact, he has done very well.”Tuesday’s accident also involved MSA Aliyu, a brigadier-general and acting general officer commanding three division, who sustained some injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Usman Sani, director of army public relations, confirmed the development to PRNigeria.

The death of the general is coming two days after James Ocholi, minister of state for labour, his wife and son died in a car crash on the Abuja-Kaduna road.
