Former President Olusegun Obasanjo prostrated before Adeyeye Ogunwusi, the Ooni of Ife, during a visit to the palace of the monarch on Friday.
The new Ooni is 41 years old.
The ex-president visited the monarch in the company some of his associates, such as Femi Okunnu, Femi Majekodunmi and Oyewole Fasaweye.
He commended the Ooni for his efforts towards uniting the Yoruba race, declaring support for the move.

Obasanjo, who urged other monarchs to support Ogunwusi, said unity was important for the progress of Yorubaland.
“I commend the role of Ooni in ensuring peace in Yorubaland. Continue what you are doing, especially your unity course. I am happy with the moves so far,” he said.

“It is only a sign of honour for the Ooni to visit anyone. That does not deny Ile-Ife of its position in the history of Yorubaland.”
He apologised to the king for not attending his coronation, and prayed for him to succeed on the throne.
Ogunwusi described his guest as a lover and promoter of the Yoruba culture, thanking him for the visit.
This is the second time that the former president would be seen publicly with the king, who ascended the throne three months ago.

Obasanjo was among the guests who formally received Ogunwusi on his way to the palace after observing 21 days rituals ahead of his inauguration.

Despite his obvious flaws and certain unbecoming antecedents, Obasanjo continues to impress with a political wisdom that most of the Nigerian elite very clearly lack.
In prostrating to this Ooni, the old man makes a very bold and powerful statement about his view of the importance of Yoruba unity. In humility, this wise old lion has actually renewed his strength and youth in Yoruba circles.
