Oby Ezekwesili ‘was never arrested or detained’

Former education minister, Mrs Oby Ezekwesili, was neither arrested nor detained by the State Security Service (SSS), the agency’s director-general, Mr. Ita Ekpeyong, has said.

Ezekwesili had tweeted early Monday morning that she was being detained and her passport seized by the SSS at the Abuja airport on her way to London, UK, for a BBC TV programme.

‎Ezekwesili, who is one of the leaders of the Bring Back Our Girls movement, later tweeted that she had been released and had boarded the flight five minutes to take-off.

But Ekpeyong told journalists at the State House on Monday afternoon that nothing can be further from the truth.

“Did she tell you she was arrested? Did you see her? She is currently in London and that shows you that she was not arrested. We did not arrest her,” he declared.

He did not give further details.
