Ododo: LNG plants will position Kogi as key player in Nigeria’s energy sector

Usman Ododo, governor of Kogi, says the development of five mini-liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants in Kogi by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited will position the state as a key player in the energy sector.

According to a statement by Ismaila Isah, special adviser on media to the governor, Ododo spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony of the LNG plants on Thursday.

Ododo hailed the project as a significant milestone that supports his administration’s goal of making Kogi a key centre for energy and industrial development in Nigeria.

He said the project would improve energy access and generate employment opportunities and attract significant investments to the state, and stimulate economic activities in the state.

“We are witnessing a historic moment that will redefine Kogi’s place in Nigeria’s energy sector,” Ododo said.

“This project is not just about gas production; it is about economic transformation, job creation, and ensuring that our state plays a central role in Nigeria’s energy future.”

The governor reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to building a skilled workforce, which will be reflected in the opportunities generated by new investments in the emerging energy sector.

He commended President Bola Tinubu for his leadership in advancing Nigeria’s energy transition, and also the NNPC and its private sector partners for their investment in the state’s energy infrastructure.

“With an initial combined production capacity of over 80 million cubic feet per day, these plants will serve as a key resource for both national and international energy markets,” he added.

Ododo assured investors that his administration remains committed to providing an enabling environment, maintaining peace and security, and attracting more strategic investments to Kogi.

Also speaking, Ekperikpo Ekpo, minister of state for petroleum resources (Gas), commended the president’s executive order fast-tracking the development of the LNG plants.

He said the projects directly respond to the federal government’s push to maximise Nigeria’s gas potential and support industrialisation efforts.

On January 30, the NNPC flagged off the construction of five mini-liquified natural gas (LNG) projects in Kogi state.

The projects are the prime LNG, NGML/Gasnexus LNG, BUA LNG, highland LNG, and LNG Arete.
