‘Officer killed’ as gunmen raze police station in Imo

Gunmen have set ablaze the Arondizuogu divisional police station in Ideato north LGA of Imo state.

One police officer was reportedly killed during the attack that occured around 2am on Tuesday.

According to sources in the community, the divisional police officer (DPO) of the area also sustained “severe injuries” after he was attacked by the gunmen.

A Sienna vehicle attached to the division and the DPO’s personal car were also vandalised.

“Gunmen have attacked the Arondizuogu divisional police headquarters,” a source, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said.

“They burnt and killed one of the police officers. They attacked at the odd hours and left the DPO with a broken head.

“They gave him machete cuts and vandalised his Jeep and a police Sienna vehicle belonging to the division.”

Mike Abbatam, spokesperson for Imo police command, confirmed the attack on the station.

He said Rabiu Hussaini, the state commissioner of police, has ordered an investigation into the incident.

“Yes. The CP is on his way there,” he added.

The attack comes hours after one person was killed during a clash between gunmen and soldiers in the state.
