Officer killed in yet another attack on police station in Ebonyi

Some gunmen, on Thursday, launched a fresh attack on a police formation in Ebonyi state, killing an officer in the process.

Loveth Odah, spokesperson of the state police command, confirmed that the incident occurred at the Obiozara police station in Ohaozara LGA.

The incident comes four days after a similar attack on Abaomege police station in Onicha LGA of the state.

Odah said the gunmen invaded the station in their numbers in the early hours of the day and started shooting sporadically.

According to NAN, an eyewitness identified as Emmanuel Onuh said the attackers invaded the station around 3am, and set some parts of the building on fire.

“They shot one inspector dead and burnt down the office of the divisional police officer and administrative block,” Onuh was quoted to have said.

Since the beginning of 2021, states in the south-east have witnessed an increase in attacks on police stations and officers.

In January, three police officers were killed when gunmen attacked the Onueke police station in Ezza south LGA; in February, a police station was burnt and the police divisional headquarters in Isu Onicha LGA was attacked by gunmen — both LGAs are in Ebonyi state.

About two weeks ago, gunmen launched two separate attacks that led to the killing of two soldiers, a policeman, and a civilian in the state.
