Okagbare, Egwero lead Team Nigeria to victory at Warri Relays

Blessing Okagbare and Ogho-Oghene Egwero inspired Team Nigeria to victory in the 4X100m relays event of the 2017 Warri Relays & CAA Grand Prix held on Tuesday.

Okagbare led the female team to a comfortable win in a time of 43.92 secs while the male team, although stretched by Botswana, returned with a time of 40.17 secs.

There was more to celebrate for Nigeria in the women’s 100m hurdles event as US-based Tobiloba Amusan continued her impressive run by winning the race in a time of 12.97 secs while Grace Ayemoba finished second in a time of 13.53 secs and Efe Favour came third.

In the men’s 100m event, Egwero came first as he clocked 10.33 secs, Keene Motukisi was in second position and Harry Chukwudike came third.

Isoken Igbinosun finished ahead of national champion, Aniekeme Alphonsus, in women’s 100m as she posted a time of 11.49 secs while Alphonsus crossed the line in 11.51 secs and Ntia Obong Mercy ran 11.66 secs.

In the women’s 800m, Agber Shimenge claimed top position in 2.11.29 secs while Ihekandu Philomena and Oluchi Offoma settled for second and third places.

In the 110m hurdles for men, Martins Ogieriakhi breasted the tape in a time of 13.82 secs ahead of Abejoye Oyeniyi and Bashiru Abuduliahi who picked second and third spots respectively.

For the 400m women’s event, it was a good day for Yinka Ajayi who not only won the race but also registered a new personal best time of 51.30 secs.

Abike Ebegniyi and Folashade Olotu were second and third.

Meanwhile, Kelechi Nwanaga broke a 15-year national record in women’s javelin, with a 58.15m throw.

The previous record of 55.30m was set by Sorochukwu Ihuefo in 2002.

The Warri Relays took place at the main bowl of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ozoro.
