Okiki: Why I signed for Egypt’s Ismaily SC

Okiki Afolabi, new Ismaily SC recruit, has explained why he joined the Egyptian Premier League side.

The striker has joined Ismaily on a four-year contract from Ethiopian Premier League champions Jimma Aba Jifar.

“It feels great to be part of the ambitious Ismaily family,” Okiki told TheCable.

“Ismaily are one of the biggest clubs in Egypt. If you can take Al Ahly and Zamalek; the next team you can mention is Ismaily. So I believe I have made the right choice joining them.

“When the management of the club told me they were interested in me, I didn’t think twice.”

Okiki, who was the best player in the Ethiopian league last term, said Ismaily’s style of play endeared him to the club.

He said: “I’ve always liked Ismaily’s style of play and the way they keep possession of the ball. Unlike other clubs that prefer direct football, Ismaily make build-ups from the back and move forward with the ball. They don’t just play long balls from the keeper to the strikers.

“I have always been fond of Ismaily. I can’t wait to make my debut in front of their supporters.

“Their supporters are the best in Egypt and they are the other reason I agreed to join them. There is nothing nicer than playing in front of a big crowd. Players are always motivated playing in full houses.

Okiki said he is looking forward to helping the club win the Egyptian league next season.
