United States is still sharing military intelligence with Nigeria despite the suspension of a military training programme between the two countries, Mike Omeri, coordinator of the national information centre and director general of the national orientation agency, has said.
On Monday, Nigeria prematurely ended the training of a Nigerian army battalion by the US, and Omeri has now disclosed that the Nigerian military was working with the US security forces in other ways other than training of Nigerian troops.
“Nigeria and America still share intelligence. They have strong military bilateral relations, and they still continue,” he said.
He also hinted that the military training was suspended for reasons of logistics.

Omeri revealed that the “eastern bloc”, which implies Russia, had been the major source of arms and ammunition for Nigeria’s security forces contrary to assumptions that the US was a major supplier of arms to the nation’s forces.
“Nigeria has been buying arms from the eastern bloc,” he said.
“Most of the arms Nigerian security personnel use are from the eastern bloc, so it is not new.”
