The federal government intends to investigate a fresh report of human rights organisation, Amnesty International (AI) accusing the military and the police of torture and extra-judicial murder of detainees.
According to coordinator of the national information centre and director-general of the National Orientation Agency (NOA), Mr Mike Omeri, the government of President Goodluck Jonathan has “zero tolerance” for human rights abuses and would therefore investigate any such allegation.
“For every investigative process, there are procedures that agencies of government adopt. Excessive torture is not acceptable,” Omeri said.
“The government of Nigeria has zero tolerance for misbehavior in its system. Today, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has promised to use the report from Amnesty International to investigate these cases to ascertain the veracity of the claims, and thereafter advise the government appropriately. So let’s wait for that.”
