The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ondo has suspended Olumide Awolumate, chairman of Akoko north-west ward 1, for assaulting Olubunmi Osadahun, the state commissioner for women affairs.

A viral video showed Olumide throwing a blue chair at the commissioner, injuring her in the process.

The incident occurred during the distribution of subsidy palliatives in Arigidi-Akoko, in Akoko north-west LGA of the state.

Osadahun was reportedly attacked by Awolumate over the allegation that the exercise was shrouded in secrecy by government officials.

During an emergency meeting at the state secretariat in Akure on Monday, Ade Adetimehin, the Ondo APC chairman, expressed disappointment at the conduct of the ward chairman.

He condemned the “crude behaviour and the level of indiscipline” exhibited by Awolumate.

“We are still wondering what could have pushed him into exhibiting that degree of primitive affront on a highly placed party chieftain, and serving Commissioner,” he said.

He called for the immediate suspension of the chairman, adding that further disciplinary actions would follow.

The APC chairman advised members of the party to always embrace self-discipline at all times.

“It is expedient to accord respect to party elders and constituted authorities,” he said.

He warned that the party would not condone or encourage any form of unruly behaviour or embarrassing conduct from its officers and members.

Meanwhile, Asabi Abiodun, Ondo commissioner of police, has ordered a thorough investigation of the matter.

Abiodun also directed that the case should be transferred to the state criminal investigation and intelligence department (SCIID) of the Ondo police command.
