The Ondo state house of assembly has impeached Jumoke Akindele, its speaker, and Fatai Olotu, her deputy.

A source told TheCable that 18 out of the 26 lawmakers executed the impeachment late last night.

Iroju Ogundeji from Odigbo state constituency has been elected as the new speaker, while Ayo Arowele from Owo state constituency  has been chosen as the deputy speaker.

The source said Olusegun Mimmiko, governor of the state, is currently meeting with the lawmakers in order to resolve the issue.

A group of women protesters led by one Olamide Falana, an activist, are said to be calling for the reinstatement of Akindele, the first woman to preside over the assembly.

Akindele was elected in 2014 to succeed Samuel Adesina who died after a protracted battle with cancer.
