One dead as bus rams into moving train in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says an accident involving a train and a bus has occurred in the Oshodi area of Lagos state.

“A train ran into a Volkswagen T4 bus at the ARENA crossing, pushing it to Oshodi U-bridge. Onlookers causing more harm than good. Men on ground, necessary agencies,” the tweet said.

“Recovery of the remains of the bus involved in the train accident is ongoing by men of LASEMA and LASTMA on ground to manage the ensuing traffic.”

Nosa Okunbor, head of public affairs, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), said rescue operations have been concluded and it was observed that the bus ran into the moving train while trying to cross the rail.

Upon arrival at the incident scene, it was discovered that a white passenger bus with registration number GGE 972 GE conveying six passengers had veered onto the rail tracks while crossing the Railway line at PWD inward Oshodi and subsequently collided with a scheduled commuter train,” Okunbor said.

“The bus was then dragged along by the train for a stretch of the journey before managing to come to a complete halt at Oshodi.

“The accident vehicle was recovered off the road with the aid of the agency’s lite rescue equipment, management measures were put in place by the emergency responders, eagle team alongside task force officials and Nigeria Police. Recovery operation concluded.”

Okunbor said the agency discovered that another vehicle was involved in the accident.

“However, as at 10a.m, additional investigation revealed a second vehicle’s involvement. A highlander JEEP was also discovered to be involved in the collision and its two adult male passengers sustained severe injuries before being transported to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH,” he explained.

“One of the injured passengers has since lost his life and have been placed in the hospital (LASUTH) morgue, while the other, is still receiving treatment.”
