One dead, several injured as BRT bus, ‘danfo’ collide in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says a fatal accident occurred on Wednesday at Ifako, Ogudu area of Lagos.

The agency said a BRT bus and a commercial vehicle were involved in the accident which took place in the early hours of the day.

In a video clip shared on LASTMA’s Twitter page, the yellow commercial bus, popularly known as ‘Danfo’, appeared to have somersaulted after clashing with the BRT vehicle.

Survivors were seen sitting on the pedestrian footpath while the LASTMA officials were coordinating the traffic.

“An accident occurred at Ifako inwards Ogudu Bridge involving a BRT bus and a commercial bus. One casualty on the ground with others injured,” the statement reads.

LASTMA said it had contacted the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and Lagos State Medical Emergencies (LASAMBUS) for assistance.

The agency added that its officers “are on the ground doing the needful”.

In another statement by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Adeseye Margaret, the director, confirmed that a BRT was engulfed in fire at the accident scene.

She said that the driver of the BRT and his assistant sustained minor injuries, adding that the driver of the commercial bus died in the accident.

Margaret said the commercial driver was alone noting that his body had been recovered and handed to the police.

“The casualty who is the driver of the commercial bus was riding alone while the BRT and his assistant escaped with minor injuries,” she said.

“The remains of the vehicles are being cleaned off the expressway just as men of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority are managing the traffic in d meantime.”

Meanwhile, on March 9, a train collided with a Lagos staff BRT bus and led to the death of six people, while many were injured.
