‘One killed’ as ‘thugs’ disrupt inauguration of APC chairman in Bayelsa

One person has reportedly been killed at the inauguration of the acting chairman of the Bayelsa state chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

According to Channels, the party faithful had gathered on Friday for the commencement of the event, holding in Yenagoa, the state capital.

Violence was said to have erupted when hoodlums allegedly loyal to the expelled party chairman in the state invaded the venue, firing gunshots to scare people away.

When contacted, Asinim Butswat, spokesman of the Bayelsa police command, told TheCable that he is yet to confirm whether someone died at the inauguration.

“(The reported death is) not confirmed yet. I will call you back,” Butswat said on telephone.

The state chapter of the party had been engulfed in crisis with the emergence of two factions loyal to Timipre Sylva, former governor of the state, and Tiwei Orunimighe, a former chairman.

The national leadership of the party then appointed Joseph Fafi as acting chairman after the expulsion of Orunimighe over alleged anti-party activities.
