EFCC official: Only three percent of our personnel are corrupt

Michael Wetkas, head of the north-east zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), says about three percent of members of the commission are corrupt.

Wetkas said this at a stakeholders meeting organised by the commission in Gombe state, on Thursday.

He said the zone chose to organise the meeting in order to interface with members of the public and civil societies for more effectiveness.

Wetkas agreed that there are corrupt members of the anti-graft agency but said the number of the corrupt ones was exaggerated.

“It is unfortunate the figure that is attached to corrupt officers in the commission,” he said.

“There are about 3 percent of our men that are corrupt. We are not happy seeing people go to jail. But that is what we have signed to do.”

Critics of the current administration have accused the EFCC of being corrupt and partial, especially in handling cases that involve some prominent political personalities.
