Onyemaechi, ex-rep, regains freedom after 11 days in captivity

Joan Onyemaechi, a former member of the house of representatives, has regained freedom after 11 days in captivity.

The Delta state police command confirmed the development in a post on X on Saturday.

“Police PRO SP Bright Edafe has just officially confirmed Rt. Hon. Joan Onyemaechi (Ada-Anioma) has been released by her abductors… details coming,” the police said.

The former lawmaker is reportedly receiving medical attention following her ordeal.

Onyemaechi was abducted on July 30 in her church in Asaba, capital of Delta. Her abductors killed her driver and police orderly before whisking her away.

The kidnappers had initially requested a N1 billion ransom, but it is unclear if any amount was paid before her release on Friday night.
