Authorities of the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, have suspended the activities of the students union government of the institution and directed all students to vacate the campus with immediate effect.
The registrar of the institution, who made the announcement through a press release, stated that the decision was arrived at as a result of the relationship of the union with “unrecognised groups and outside influences”.
OOU has been enmeshed in crisis these past few weeks, and the climax came on Sunday when governor of Ogun State, Ibikunle Amosun directed the indefinite closedown of the institution in order to restore peace and normalcy as students were embarking on series of protests to force a reduction of their school fees as well as its implementation from the current academic session.
Though the students claimed that the demonstrations were organised to express their dissatisfaction with the “politically motivated” reduction in their tuition fee, the government believes that they are being influenced.

“Following the announcement by the Ogun state government of the indefinite closure of Olabisi Onabanjo University for security reasons, the university authorities hereby direct all students to stay away from the university campuses,” read the statement.
“The Student Union Government (SUG) has been proscribed forthwith for collaborating with unregistered groups and external influences.”
The statement added that the management of the university intends to hold a meeting with parents to discuss the way forward.
