OpenAI has rolled out an enhanced memory feature that allows ChatGPT to remember user preferences and past interactions.

Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, announced the update on Thursday via X.

He described the feature as “surprisingly great” and said it represents a shift towards artificial intelligence (AI) tools that offer more personalised support over time.

“We have greatly improved memory in chatgpt–it can now reference all your past conversations!” Altman wrote.

“This is a surprisingly great feature imo, and it points at something we are excited about: ai systems that get to know you over your life, and become extremely useful and personalized.”

The company siad the enhanced memory feature is currently being rolled out to ChatGPT Plus and Pro subscribers, however, OpenAI did not provide a timeline for when it would be available to free-tier users.

OpenAI also confirmed that, due to data protection regulations, the feature will not be available in regions such as the European Economic Area (EEA), the UK, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein.

The new memory update is not the first time OpenAI has explored memory capabilities.

In 2024, the company introduced an option for users to manually instruct ChatGPT to remember or forget specific details.

The announcement follows a similar move by Google, which rolled out a memory feature for its Gemini chatbot in February.
