The Petroleum Products Retail Outlets Owners Association of Nigeria (PETROAN) says the successful operation of the Port Harcourt refinery has led to a reduction in the circulation of adulterated diesel and kerosene in the country.

Port Harcourt refinery began loading petroleum products into trucks in November 2024.

In a statement on Tuesday, Joseph Obele, PETROAN’s spokesperson, said its members buying from the refinery have ensured a steady supply of standard petroleum products.

“PETROAN is pleased to note that its members are currently loading AGO (diesel) and DPK (kerosene) from the refinery, while NNPCL retail marketers are loading PMS (petrol),” Obele said.

“This development has not only ensured a steady supply of petroleum products but has also helped to eliminate the circulation of fake kerosene and diesel in the market.

“PETROAN wishes to extend special commendation to the managing director of the Port Harcourt Refining Company, which operates the refinery, Ibrahim Onoja, for his exceptional leadership, technical expertise, and dedication to ensuring the successful rehabilitation and operation of the refinery.”

Obele said the association commends NNPC for successfully running the revamped Port Harcourt refinery for 180 days non-stop.

The refinery, which had been dormant for over 20 years, was revamped with a loan secured from Afreximbank and executed by Tecnimont Nigeria Limited, a subsidiary of the Maire Tecnimont Group.

“PETROAN commends Tecnimont Nigeria Limited for their professionalism and expertise in delivering a world-class rehabilitation project,” he said.

“We also commend the host communities for their cooperation and support during the rehabilitation process.”

Obele said the refinery, commissioned in October 2024, has achieved a remarkable feat by running continuously for 180 days up to March, demonstrating the effectiveness of the rehabilitation project.
