Orelope-Adefulire: Nigeria should focus on poverty eradication to meet 2030 SDGs target

Adejoke Orelope-Adefulire, senior special assistant to the president on sustainable development goals (SDGs), says Nigeria needs to intensify efforts to implement the SDGs in 2024.

In a statement issued on Sunday to mark the ninth year since Nigeria committed to the SDGs, Orelope-Adefulire said stakeholders must collaborate to ensure that the country meets the 2030 deadline.

She said the government must focus on poverty eradication, quality education, gender equality, climate action, and healthcare to meet the target.

She noted that focusing on those key areas would guarantee the “overall success of the SDGs and the well-being of the Nigerian populace”.

The presidential aide said it is important to adopt innovation, inclusivity, and accountability in the implementation process, adding that she is confident in Nigeria’s ability to achieve the SDGs.

She emphasized that progress in these domains is paramount to the overall success of the SDGs and the well-being of the Nigerian populace.

“As Nigeria enters this pivotal year, we remain committed to championing sustainable development initiatives, advocating for policy coherence, and fostering partnerships that will propel our great nation towards the realization of the SDGs,” she said.

The United Nations had earlier warned that achieving the 2030 SDGs agenda would become no more than a “broken promise” to Nigerians if urgent action is not taken.
