The Oriwu Club Ikorodu has awarded N2 million in scholarships to ten students from the Lagos suburb.

The scholarships, which will see each beneficiary receive N200,000 per year, is financed from the club’s education endowment fund.

The awards were presented during the club’s 51st annual general meeting on Sunday, 23 February 2025, at the clubhouse in Ikorodu.

The Oriwu Club Ikorodu is a social and philanthropic organisation that prides itself in community development, education support, and the promotion of cultural initiatives in Ikorodu, Lagos state.

Ganie Adegboyega Oluwole, the club’s president, led a cheque presentation for the scholarship which is conditioned on maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.5.

He was joined by the board of trustees chairman Kayode Shoderu and the vice-president Asiwaju Kaoli Olusanya.

Oluwole highlighted the club’s commitment to supporting students from Ikorodu.

He noted that the scholarship amount was doubled from N100,000 to N200,000 this year to address economic challenges faced by families.

“In June 2024, the general assembly resolved to increase the scholarship value to alleviate financial burdens on students and their families,” he said.

“This reflects our dedication to fostering education and empowering the next generation of leaders from Ikorodu.”

The scholarship’s selection process was overseen by a committee that collaborated with the Ikorodu Division Students’ Association (ISA) and the National Association of Ikorodu Division Students (NAIDS).

Announcements were made at key locations, including the Ayangbure Palace and Ikorodu Town Hall.

The selection committee, in a statement, said applications were available online to ensure accessibility.

A total of 51 applications were received, with interviews conducted both in person at the Clubhouse and virtually via Zoom.

After a review, ten students were selected as the 2024 beneficiaries.

Recognising contributions to its fund, the club said one of its benefactors Oluseyi Onafowakan donates N1 million annually to the scholarship.

It said another benefactor Oloye Oye M. Solebo sponsors two students studying Purchasing and Supply (supply chain management).

Kayode Shoderu (the BoT chairman) expressed gratitude to donors and urged others to support the initiative.

The presentation event concluded with a renewed commitment to expanding the the club’s education endowment fund.
