Samuel Ortom, former governor of Benue, has cancelled his 64th birthday celebration in sympathy with victims of recent attacks in the state.
Ortom announced the decision in a statement issued on Wednesday in Makurdi by Terver Akase, his media aide.
The ex-governor said the decision followed sustained attacks and killings across several LGAs in Benue state.
“In light of the ongoing intensified invasion, attacks, and senseless killing of innocent Benue people by herdsmen across various local government areas, Chief Ortom has decided not to hold any celebration,” the statement reads.

“Instead, he has chosen to use the occasion to demonstrate solidarity with the victims and their families, who have suffered grievously from the attacks.”
He expressed gratitude to the people of Benue and Nigerians for their messages and prayers on his birthday.
Akase quoted Ortom as extending heartfelt sympathy to those affected and urging residents to keep praying for the victims.

“He calls on everyone to seek divine intervention to end the carnage and restore peace and security to the state, as well as other parts of the country,” the statement added.
Ortom urged prayers for President Bola Tinubu, Hyacinth Alia, Benue state governor, and George Akume, secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), asking God to grant them wisdom, strength and guidance to tackle the problem.
The former governor thanked God for His blessings and pledged continued service to Him and humanity.
There has been an uptick in attacks across the country in recent times, especially in Benue and Plateau states.

On April 16, many residents were killed when gunmen invaded Otobi-Akpa and Emichi in Otukpo LGA, and Utonkon in Ado LGA of Benue.
Earlier this month, residents of Otukpo in Benue south district staged a protest against the incessant cases of kidnappings and killings.
The demonstration saw protesters, mostly youths, occupy the Otukpo-Enugu federal highway, while calling on the government to address the growing insecurity in the state.
The Benue governor on Monday blamed foreign elements for the recent killings across the state.
