Osai Ojigho, Abiodun Baiyewu to discuss freedom of speech at #ThursdayTalks

Freedom of speech will take centre stage in the latest edition of #ThursdayTalks, a monthly conversation on national issues.

The virtual conference, powered by BudgIT and EIE Nigeria, is billed to hold on June 24 by 5:30pm.

“Is freedom of speech in danger in Nigeria?” will be the theme for this month’s talk.

In a statement shared with TheCable, Iyanu Fatoba, a communication associate at BudgIT, said the talk will intensify the call for the federal government to lift the ban it imposed on Twitter earlier this month.

“It is no gainsaying that human rights cum freedom of speech have been consistently attacked by the Nigerian government, judging by the trajectories from the #NGOBill, #SOCIALMEDIABILL,  #HATESPEECH, #NBCRULES and the #TwitterBan,” the statement read.

“We believe that this month’s conversation will amplify our voices and demands from the government to lift the Twitter Ban and censorships targeted towards freedom of speech and right of expression.”

Speakers and panelists for the event include Abiodun Baiyewu, executive director, Global Rights; Osai Ojigho(pictured), country director of Amnesty International Nigeria; Nelson Olanipekun, executive director, Citizens Gavel.
