Oshoala missing as Ajibade, Nnadozie make nominees’ list for CAF women’s award

For the first time since 2015, Asisat Oshoala did not make the shortlist for CAF women's best player award.

Rasheedat Ajibade and Chiamaka Nnadozie have been nominated for the 2024 CAF Women’s Player of the Year award. 

The Super Falcons duo was named in the 10-player list of nominees released by CAF on Wednesday.

Other footballers on the list include Thembi Kgatlana of South Africa, the Zambian duo of Barbara Banda and Racheal Kundananji, and Sandrine Niyonkuru of Burundi.

The rest are Tabitha Chawinga and Temwa Chawinga from Malawi, Morocco’s Sanaa Mssoudy and Jermaine Seoposenwe of South Africa.

Asisat Oshoala, the holder of the prestigious prize, did not make the list. For the first time since 2015, the six-time CAF women’s best player of the year failed to make the award’s shortlist.

Nnadozie was also nominated for the Goalkeeper of the Year prize. The 23-year-old won the award in 2023. She will compete against Monle Oyono of Edo Queens for this year’s gong.

Three Nigerian sides were nominated for the national team of the award. The Super Falcons, the Falconets and the Flamingos all made the shortlist.

Nigeria’s Flourish Sabastine and Chiamaka Okuchukwu were named among the contenders for the Best Young Player prize.

In the coach of the year category, Bankole Olowookere of Flamingos, Falconets’ Chris Danjuma of Falconets and Moses Adukwu of Edo Queens are nominees.

The CAF Awards 2024 will be held on December 16 in Marrakech, Morocco.
