Victor Osimhen has been voted the best player in Serie A for the month of September.

The winner of the prestigious monthly award was announced in a statement released by the AIC on Wednesday.

The 22-year-old Nigerian beat Nicolo Barella, Inter Milan midfielder, Brahim Diaz of AC Milan, and Fiorentina’s Giacomo Bonaventura to the award organised by the Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC).

“It seemed that Victor Osimhen’s 2021-22 season had started in the wake of the past one, in which between injuries of various kinds he almost never played continuously,” the statement read.

“But after being sent off on matchday one, against Venezia, and after having unlocked his debut in a Europa League, against Leicester, he never stopped. In September, he scored seven goals in six games and, before the match against Fiorentina, the seventh consecutive victory of Spalletti’s Napoli, in which Osimhen won the penalty of the momentary 1-1, he had found the goal consecutively in five games between the league and cup.

“Sent to the vote by the editorial team of the Last Man, together with other decisive players in the good start of their teams (Barella, Brahim Diaz and Bonaventura), Osimhen won with more than half of the total votes – which, it must be remembered, assign his colleagues Serie A players on request AIC.

“Osimhen showed exceptional determination, transforming chaotic actions into golden opportunities, forcing the defenders to continuous physical duels, aiming for depth with an exhausting constancy. Very few in Serie A can defend Osimhen’s mix of speed and power. And a little bit of space, against a player like Osimhen, is still too much space.”

Osimhen has been in red-hot form for Napoli this season with seven goals in eight games, helping the Parthenopeans to the summit of Serie A.
