Victor Osimhen, Super Eagles of Nigeria forward, has returned positive for COVID-19, his Italian club confirmed on Friday evening.

The 21-year-old Nigerian international, who has been sidelined since last November after an injury to his shoulder while representing his country in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, had returned to the club on Thursday after his Christmas break.

In a short statement on Twitter, Napoli said upon arrival, the former Lille player was subjected to the compulsory COVID-19 PCR test and his result came out positive.

“Napoli report that footballer Victor Osimhen tested positive for the molecular naso-pharyngeum swab on his return from abroad yesterday afternoon. The player is asymptomatic and has not met the team group,” the club wrote.

In July last year, Osimhen joined the Italian side on a five-year deal from Lille, a French Ligue 1 club, for a deal worth £74 million.

At Lille, he scored 18 goals and made six assists in 38 appearances across all competitions to emerge Mastiffs player of the season.
