Vice-president Yemi Osinbajo has received the torch of unity ahead of the 2022 Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA) hosted by the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, UNILAG’s vice-chancellor, and some members of the organising committee of event visited Osinbajo at the presidential villa on Friday.
Speaking during the meeting, Osinbajo, who was a former lecturer at UNILAG, expressed delight at the preparations made so far for the annual games.
He also expressed optimism that the institution would surpass its hosting of the 1998 edition of NUGA.

“I am delighted to be receiving this Torch of Unity and I thank the hardworking Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ogundipe,” he said.
Highlighting importance of the event, Osinbajo recounted how it has helped produced top sports stars including Olusoji Fasuba, Bisi Afolabi, Vincent Enyeama, Chika Chukwumerije, Precious Dede, Nkiru Okosieme, Adeolu Adekola, Mutiu Adepoju, Seyi Olofinjana, Edema Fuludu, Edith Agoye and Olumide Oyedeji.
On his part, Sunday Dare, minister of youth and sports, hailed the university for reviving the games with its excitement.

He also enjoined the organising committee to stage a competition which every stakeholder would be proud of.
“I wish to pledge the federal government’s commitment to grassroots sports development in its belief that young talents would be unearthed at the competition,” he said.
In his remark, the VC promised that the games would be used to project the culture of excellence and hospitality of Lagos state and Nigeria to the world.
The NUGA 2022 is scheduled to hold at the UNILAG campus between March 16 and 26.
