Osinbajo to sue Fani-Kayode for defamation

Yemi Osinbajo, the vice-presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has demanded N2 billion as well as a retraction from Femi Fani-Kayode, director of media and publicity of PDP presidential campaign for alleged libel.

Fani-Kayode had alleged that Osinbajo swore an oath to resign and make way for Bola Tinubu if APC wins the presidential election.

However, Osinbajo is demanding a retraction, saying the statement not only impugned his reputation but was capable of lowering him in the estimation of Nigerians.

“The direct meaning, purport and innuendo or insinuation of the false, misleading and defamatory statement is that our client, Professor Osinbajo is deceitful and participating in a devise that constitutes subterfuge and lacks integrity in concert with others who you also describe as evil, insensitive, wicked, selfish and desperate,” read a letter issued by Femi Falana, counsel to Osinbajo.

“Your characterisation of professor Osinbajo as a ‘stooge’ in context suggests that he is complicit in a fraud against the Nigerian people.

“It is clear that the entire publication was a vicious, wicked and reckless ploy to impugn the reputation of our client and lower him in the estimation of right thinking members of the public.”

Falana subsequently demanded and an apology which must be aired on four television stations and published in four national newspapers with N2 billion as payment for damages.
