Our aim in Paris was to get an away goal, says Mikel

John Mikel Obi, Chelsea of England and Nigerian International, has revealed that the London club came to Paris with the aim of scoring an away goal, which they hope will eventually enhance their chances of making it to the next round of the UEFA champions league.

Mikel Obi told BET365 that Chelsea were nevertheless disappointed to have lost the game. Mikel was central to Chelsea conceding PSG’s first goal but scored the equaliser before Cavani won the game for the home team.

Mikel brought down Lucas Moura five yards outside of the box for a free kick, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic hammered it home for the opener as it deflected off the midfielder.

“I had to fall in because he [Lucas] was going deeper and deeper into our 18-yard box,” Mikel told BT Sport.

“I had to – if not get the ball – foul him, which I did. And then the free kick as well just skipped off my feet and went into the back of the net. But we came back strong as well, but we’re very disappointed to have lost the game.

“We know they’re a very good team. Our aim was to come out here and get a goal and we’ve done that tonight. We still have the second leg to play back home, so we have to take that back home and capitalise on that and make sure we build on that.”

Away goals have separated these sides in the Champions League in each of the last two seasons.

Mikel Obi’s goal against PSG was his second Uefa Champions League goal and his sixth goal overall for Chelsea in 354 Chelsea games.

He made his UCL debut on September 12, 2006, starting in the game against Levski Sofia.

Mikel is one of Nigeria’s most decorated players with one UCL medal, two English Premier League medals, four English FA Cup medals, two League Cup golds, one Europa Cup gold and one Community Shield gold medal.
