About 1,017 pupils in Gombe are competing in the maiden Inter-Primary Schools Athletics championship in the state.
The tournament — sponsored by Ahmed Shuaibu-Gara, the chairman of the Gombe State Athletics Association — is held at the Pantami Stadium.
The maiden competition, which also has boys and girls from 47 schools in attendance, began with the 100m heat.
During the opening ceremony, the kids marched past Mohammed Kolo Bajoga as the permanent secretary of Gombe state’s ministry of sports took the salute.

The organisers of the four-day competition, which ends on July 12, said the target is to begin the process that would produce world athletic stars for Nigeria in the near future.
