More than 10,000 students from primary and secondary schools across Nigeria on Saturday participated in the 22nd edition of the annual national mathematics competition (ANMC), organised by the Nigerian Tulip International Colleges (NTIC) in collaboration with the National Mathematical Centre (NMC).
The competition involved students from primary 5 and 6 and those from junior secondary school 1 to 3 and took place at selected centres in 31 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).
Fevzullah Bilgin, the managing director of NTIC, noted that ANMC is one of Nigeria’s largest and most prestigious mathematics competitions.
He added that the competition was designed to promote mathematical excellence and inspire students to pursue their passion for mathematics while testing their problem-solving and reasoning abilities.

For this year, he said participants were from over 2,000 schools across Nigeria, highlighting the competition’s role in nurturing a new generation of mathematicians.
“Over the years, ANMC has attracted thousands of participants and helped cultivate a new generation of mathematicians,” Bilgin told journalists in Abuja on Saturday.
“Qualified students from this first round will move on to the second round in either Abuja or Kano, depending on their regional affiliation.”

“Students who perform well in the competition could earn up to a 100 percent tuition scholarship for their entire secondary school education at any NTIC branch.”
The NTIC MD also noted that since its inception, 482 students have benefitted from the scholarship scheme, which has contributed to igniting a passion for mathematics among Nigerian students.
He added that NTIC has been the sole sponsor of the competition, partnering with the National Mathematical Centre to ensure its continued success.
Erdal Yilmaz, NTIC’s head of academics and coordinator of the competition, stated that the top five students will receive cash prizes ranging from N500,000 to N100,000 after the second round.

“In recognition of their dedication, the mathematics teachers of these students will also receive cash rewards up to N400,000,” Yilmaz said.
“Additionally, the students’ schools will be awarded desktop computers, printers, and tablet phones.
“NTIC remains committed to the vision of the Annual National Mathematical Competition.
“We look forward to discovering the next generation of mathematics champions. This competition is more than just solving equations; it fosters critical thinking, problem-solving skills, and a love for mathematics.
