Sunshine player took clothes off because he was ‘overjoyed’

Sunshine Stars player, Prince Aggrey, says he got carried away after scoring against Dolphins.

Aggrey and teammate Ebenezer Odunlami took goal celebration to another level after stripping during a wild jubilation in one of the high points of the Nigeria Profession Football League (NPFL) week four games.

The League Management Company (LMC) wasted no time in slamming a one-match ban on the players who were also fined N50, 000 “for indecent exposure and conduct capable of bringing the league to disrepute”.

However, Aggrey has explained why he raised the bar in goal celebration.

“Last season we played goalless against Dolphins at home, we got a penalty to finish off but we blew it off. That same scenario was about repeating itself this season and it now looked like a tough jinx to break,” he told SL10.ng

“I was lucky to be at the right place in the right time, the goal came on a platter of gold and I hit the ball so hard and found it hit the back of the net. I felt so happy because finally we’ve broken the draw jinx at home against Dolphins and I was so happy and so I got carried away during the celebration.

“I just heard the news of the suspension and fine too. I’m in Kano with the team hoping to help my team, Sunshine Stars against El-Kanemi Warriors tomorrow but the news meant that I won’t be playing any part. I felt depressed and I’m remorseful that I’m suspended and fined. Really. I was overjoyed that I got the goal at the very later stage of the match and just ran celebrating.”

Dolphins manager, Stanley Eguma, also got a N100, 000 fine by the LMC for blaming the referee for his team’s defeat in the game in Akure.

The accused referee was however sanctioned by the LMC. Centre referee, John Charles from Enugu and his assistant Matador Ogunta from Abia state were suspended from officiating in the league for the rest of the season.
