Mesut Ozil, Arsenal midfielder, has offered to pay the wages of Gunnersaurus, the club’s recently sacked mascot.

The German football star took to his Twitter page on Tuesday to make the declaration.

Jerry Quy, the man who wore the dinosaur costume and played Gunnersaurus, the club’s iconic mascot for 27 years, was relieved of his duties at Emirates Stadium at the start of the week.

Arsenal had on Monday said his services were no longer required in the absence of supporters at the Emirates Stadium and other EPL grounds due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Ozil, who is out of favour with Mikel Arteta, however, said he will pay the mascot’s salary for as long as he is an Arsenal player.

” I was so sad that Jerry Quy aka our famous & loyal mascot Gunnersaurus and integral part of our club was being made redundant after 27 years,” he wrote.

“As such, I’m offering to reimburse Arsenal with the full salary of our big green guy as long as I will be an Arsenal player, so Jerry can continue his job that he loves so much.”

Ozil, who is the club’s highest earner on £350,000-a-week, has not played for the North London side since March 2020.
