Paris Club refund saga: Suspect dies in Abuja

Oladapo Joseph Idowu, one of the suspects investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the Paris Club refund saga, died at the weekend in Abuja, TheCable understands.

Details of the tragedy are still sketchy but TheCable was informed that the man, who was an aide to Senate President Bukola Saraki, collapsed while jogging in Maitama, Abuja, on Saturday.

Although he was taken to a hospital by passers-by, he did not survive what was suspected to be a heart attack. He was in his 60s.

In a report sent on the Paris Club saga to President Muhammadu Buhari in March 2017, EFCC said N19 billion was diverted from the N522.74 billion initial refund to the states.

The agency indicted a former Heritage Bank executive director, Robert Mbonu, the consultant engaged by the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF) for the transactions.

Also indicted by EFCC are Melrose General Services Limited; Kathleen Erhimu, the relationship manager to the senate president; Obiora Amobi, the deputy chief of staff to the senate president; Gbenga Peter Makanjuola, Kolawole Shittu and Idowu.

They all denied any wrongdoing.
