Paris Olympics: Nigeria’s medal drought continues as Brume finishes fifth in long jump

Ese Brume finished fifth in the final of the women’s long jump at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The 28-year-old could only leap 6.70 meters in her final attempt to finish outside the podium zone.

US Davis-Woodwall Tara took gold ahead of Mihambo Malaika of Germany, who came in second, and fellow compatriot Jasmine Moore, who won bronze.

Brume was off the pace in the final and barely qualified for the top eight with the last jump in the first phase of the encounter.

She was one of Nigeria’s biggest medal hopefuls at the Olympics and the country’s most consistent conveyors of accolades at major international competitions.

Brume won a bronze medal in the women’s long jump at the Tokyo Olympics. She was one of Team Nigeria’s two medallists from the Games.

But it was not meant to be in Paris for Brume. Her compatriots, Ruth Usoro and Prestina Ochonogor, placed 10th and 12th in the final.

Team Nigeria continues the search for the country’s first medal at the Olympics.

The country’s hope rests on Tobi Amusan in women’s 100 meters hurdles. The world record holder is scheduled to compete in the event’s semi-final on Friday.
