PDP governors: Tinubu should review his economic policies… Nigerians groaning under hardship

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have asked President Bola Tinubu to “urgently” review his economic policies that are causing hardship for citizens.

The governors spoke in a communiqué issued at the end of a two-day meeting held at the Plateau state government house in Jos.

Bala Mohammed, chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, signed the communiqué.

The governors asked Tinubu to “re-examine macroeconomics and fiscal policies that will address the welfare and well-being of Nigerians”.

“The forum empathises with Nigerians who are groaning under the oppressive economic hardship foisted on the nation by the policies and decisions of the APC-led federal government,” the communiqué reads.

“The forum calls on the president to urgently review both macroeconomic and fiscal policies that will address the welfare and well-being of Nigerians.

“The forum wishes to pledge that all PDP governors will continue to aggressively pursue policies and programs that will reduce the hardship and ensure progress and development.”

The PDP governors also asked the party’s national working committee (NWC) to convene a national executive committee (NEC) meeting by February 2025.

On Friday, the party indefinitely postponed the NEC meeting earlier rescheduled for November 28 due to the funeral of Patience Eno, the late wife of Umo Eno, governor of Akwa-Ibom.

Mohammed said the period from November to February 2025 would be dedicated to addressing the critical challenges facing the party.

“The forum is strongly advising the NWC to call NEC latest by the first week of February 2025 to allow for elaborate consultations with critical stakeholders of the Party,” he said.

“The period between November and February is to address the existential problems confronting the party, with a deliberate timeline of activities within the period under review to address issues of leadership and litigation confronting the party.”

Since 2022, the PDP has been in an internal crisis that has polarised its NWC.

A faction of the party wants Umar Damagum to be removed as the acting national chairman, while another faction wants him to continue to occupy the position.
