Buhari must end insurgency in July 2015 as promised, says PDP

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the nation’s president, Muhammadu Buhari, not to forget his promise to end insurgency by the end of July.

In a statement issued by Olisa Metuh, its national publicity secretary, PDP said it gave time for the president and the APC to settle down in office, saying the governing party seems to have no clear-cut direction on governance.

“The APC must understand that the hallmark of democracy is freedom of expression and opinion, particularly on governance issues; inalienable rights of all citizens guaranteed by the constitution and which must not be denied them under any guise whatsoever.

“Though we had decided to give President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling party sometime to settle down, indicators show that the APC is not getting its bearing right and the PDP, as a party that has nurtured and sustained democracy in the last 16 years, cannot fold our hands and watch our nation drift towards dangerous undemocratic paths.

“The concern of well-meaning Nigerians is that this may be a pointer to the fact that the APC lacks clear-cut directions on how to govern a nation as complex as Nigeria.”

Referring to a CNN interview with Buhari on April 2, 2015, Metuh said rather than help Buhari to meet up with his campaign promises, the party leaders are “fighting for positions” in government.

“The negative effect of the glaring political commotion in the APC is compounding President Buhari’s self confessed nervousness and puzzlement, his flip-flops and worrisome reneging on campaign promises for which Nigerians will continue to hold him accountable.

“Instead of fighting for positions, which betrays their lust, APC leaders should be more concerned with how to help President Buhari, who is still struggling with his ministerial list and basic appointments more than a week after his inauguration.

“They should be more concerned with how to end insurgency by the end of July as promised by President Buhari in his April 2, 2015 CNN interview.”

The PDP further highlighted some of the APC’s promises while emphasising the need for direction in the ruling party.

“They should be concerned about how to pay N5,000 each to 25 million poor Nigerians beginning from the end of June; how to bring the naira to the same value with the dollar; provide allowances to the discharged but unemployed Youth Corps members for Twelve (12) months; provide free education and meals for school children among others as they promised during the campaigns.

“We invite the APC to note the concern of Nigerians that the pictures emanating from their camp are not reassuring in this direction.”

  1. Haba PDP! Agreed that driver’s seat not the same as passenger’s seat, lets give Buhari some space

  2. The core function of a credible opposition is to keep the ruling party on its toes. The earlier the better for everybody.

  3. Thank God you said you’ve ruled for sixteen, the mess you cause for those year cannot be repair in thirty-days so,give more chance he will surely succeed.

  4. It’s not how fast but how well. PDP, one of the reasons you failed was because you were always quick to act. Lets give change a chance.

  5. APC is showing that it lacks direction.
Let us give them 2 years to Settle down and appoint members of their team.
Then 2 years after, we shall vote them out.

  6. Let’s not get sentimental people, if a promise was made and these promises formed part of the basis for which GMB was elected, he has no choice but to keep them otherwise they would amount to deceit. True we want change but the real change is not in the change of personnel or party but in the change of policies and administration styles and the present government must be held accountable in these regards.

  7. If we truely love Nigeria, its too early for pdp to start criticising Buharis administration….we should allow him to form his government first

    1. Pls when will he form his government? One year after inauguration? Was the two full months after “winning” the election not enough time to build a team? Haba naija! Wake up!

  8. For several years, the PDP could not end boko haram. Now that APC is in government, we have to give them time to plan and execute.

    1. Our dear eng do you by any chance realize that a promise is a debt? Did PDP promise to end insurgency in two months? APC made the promise and there is nothing wrong in letting them know that we have already started counting days. Pls don’t allow rage or hatred or even worse pride to distort your sense of judgement. This dear country belongs to us all.

  9. Metu, tell us y former NSA Azazi said BK. Haram is PDP?, and Modu Sheriff became good friend of PDP? Who was almost given an apartment there?
    PDP 16yrs no light
    PDP 6yrs inflamed BH
    PDP 16yrs No water
PDP 16yrs Corruption at it’s pick
PDP 16yrs no infrastructure if compared with the monies that accrued
Y do want PMB to fixed your terrible mess within 1month?,
All we want PMB to do within this time frame, is to get you guys (PDP) people destruction party to explain to Nigerians your rains of administration or the Prisons should accommodate you guys.

  10. The fact that PDP messed up for 16 years is not in doubt but what is of concern to me now is the ability of GMB and APC to deliver on promises. Though it is 2 early to begin to judge them now but you cannot throw away the fact that when a promise is not kept or does not appear to be kept by the incumbent, it cast doubts. No one can truely blame PDP now for they are doing their job which is keeping the incumbent on his toes, APC sure did the same thing. Honestly we need to begin to see some actions and not excuses as we have been getting. The honest fact is that both GMB and APC cannot tell us that they did not know about our problems before making promises to us and if they have made these promises, they must at least been seen to be keeping them but more importantly keep them without excuses.

    1. Buhari and the APC will keep their promises to Nigerians. Remember that they have four years to fulfil these promises, and if they fail, Nigerians will show them the way out, just as they did the PDP. Buhari needs time to get other stakeholders, including foreign partners, to buy into his policies, for easy implementation. That he is already doing, as shown by his ongoing consultations. I advise the PDP to concentrate on reorganising to become a formidable opposition party instead of wasting time criticising Buhari who is only a week in office.

      1. I like optimistic people. You sound like one. But your fine grammar is just that—fine grammar. Abeg define how much time is required for a government that volunteered after knowing issues on ground before volunteering to govern, needs to settle down. Naija, I dey laugh.

    2. Buhari is well capable of sorting the insurgency before July 2015 and he will do it.

APC had good Strategists who crafted the message Nigerians wanted to hear during the election. They need to bring them back for implementation. Script writing/Talk is cheap. The devil is in the implementation. Now we need them more than ever.

    3. What promises can be fixed in one week ,you are almost impossible to be suggesting this ,why don’t you keep quiet for a while and let them work .what can you do for a Nation that had been bastardised within 16 years in one week.? Pls stop all these distractions,it is evil

  11. A promise is a promise; keeping a promise is keeping ones integrity. If APC cant keep electioneering promise, then, logically, they lack integrity. We hired Buhari to clean up the mess, and he gave us his word; this we stand and its none negotiable.

    1. I seem to agree with your comments. Promise made, promise to keep. Let us be uptimistic. But we must allow time to fulfil those promises.

  12. I think Olisah Metu is day dreaming! How can even a miracle worker right the wrongs inflicted on Nigeria for the past 16yrs by PDP, , in just 2weeks? Lets give APC some chance, say 12yrs bcos the damage is massive

  13. Hhhhhhhhoooooo ,this is genesis of our party PDP to cry louder. b/c water has pass garri&our oga has ran away with our monies, sixteen yrs of my party PDP ruled ,my oil community has no electricity, the punishment that God gave to devils in our bible story has upon our party PDP ,it is vry shameful. so let bear it

  14. Your comment.. A honest & religious person like Pres. Buhari must keep to his promises or give reason for any failure. Pls lets observe him for 4 yrs for judgment
