Peter Mbah, governor of Enugu, has decried the poor maintenance of federal roads across the country.

Mbah spoke on Monday when he visited the site of the collapsed bridge between the New Artisan flyover and the NNPC mega station along the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway in the state.

The collapsed bridge connects Enugu and Rivers state.

The governor called for a new maintenance model to ensure better condition and longevity of roads across the country.

In a post on X, Mbah expressed gratitude that no life was lost during the collapse of the bridge.

“Obviously, the current model of federal road maintenance is no longer working. If it did, the collapse of the bridge could have been prevented,” he wrote.

“I call on the federal government to consider the concession of all federal roads in the states to the state governments for proper maintenance in conjunction with the private sector.”

The governor appealed to motorists to use alternative inner-city routes to their destinations, while the relevant authorities carry out the needed repairs.
