Peter Obi to governments: Complete existing road projects… stop launching new ones

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, has decried the deplorable state of roads across the country.

In a post on his X page on Saturday, Obi said all the tiers of government should prioritise the completion of existing road infrastructure.

While sharing his recent travel experience, the former governor of Anambra noted that new road projects add to the growing list of abandoned ones nationwide.

“On Tuesday, the 15th, my journey from Onitsha in Anambra State to Anyigba in Kogi State by road once again underscored my consistent appeal,” Obi wrote.

“This appeal is for all tiers of government to prioritize the repair and completion of existing road infrastructure rather than launching new projects that may not be completed anytime soon, further adding to the growing list of abandoned projects scattered all over the country.

“The Onitsha-Anyigba journey took over 7 hours via Obollo Afor, Otukpa, Ejule, and Anyigba, and the return trip via Ogugu and Enugu-Ezike took 7 hours for a 30-minute meeting.

“This year, my travel experiences included Calabar to Uyo taking four hours instead of one, Port Harcourt to Bayelsa and Warri to Benin being treacherous, and Abuja to Kaduna requiring over two hours to navigate the Kaduna bypass.

“The Onitsha to Benin route was no different; my recent Benin to Auchi and back trip was excruciating, leaving one wondering.

“I know these things cannot be fixed overnight, but my appeal is that there should be total commitment to alleviating the suffering of the Nigerian travelling public, rather than launching new projects.

“The resources should be directed toward improving the existing roads and easing the burden on commuters.”
