Before tragedy reared its ugly head on January 16, Aderinola street wore a crown of beauty and serenity that is typical of Bodija, a highbrow area of Ibadan, the Oyo state capital.
Flowers and trees of various species and colour combinations serenaded the facades of some houses, complementing the sprawl of tarred roads connecting Dejo Oyelese, Okediji, Adeyi and environs.
Now a shadow of their former selves, structures that once bore testament to decades-long architectural aesthetics are covered by specks of dust and destruction.
The sight for onlookers who throng in daily is that of mangled cars, collapsed buildings, security personnel, heavy-duty vehicles, rescue operators, and medical staff.

Using Google Street View, TheCable conducted a check of what Aderinola street looked like before the explosion and visited the scene of the incident to see what had changed.
Below are pictures of some buildings before and after the explosion — with an insight into the extent of damage incurred by residents and homeowners.
Editor’s note: Pictures (before) extracted from Google Street View were last updated in 2018. On-scene assessment by TheCable shows some buildings have been repainted or renovated.
