PHOTOS: Aisha Maikudi takes over as acting VC of UniAbuja

Aisha Maikudi, the newly appointed acting vice-chancellor (VC) of the University of Abuja, has resumed duties at the institution.

Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, the outgoing vice chancellor whose tenure ended on June 30, handed over to Maikudi on Monday at the permanent campus of the university.

On June 27, 41-year-old Maikudi, a professor of international law, was announced as the acting VC of the university.

Maikudi is the youngest female professor of law in Northwestern Nigeria and at UniAbuja.

She attended Queens College, Lagos, where she obtained her West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

She then proceeded to the University of Reading, graduating with an LLB in 2004, and earned an LLM from the London School of Economics & Political Science in 2005. She completed her PhD in International Law in 2015 from the University of Abuja.

Maikudi joined the UniAbuja as a Lecturer II on September 4, 2008, and rose to the rank of professor in 2022.

She was the first female deputy dean of the university’s law faculty in 2018 and later served as the pioneer director of the University of Abuja International Centre in 2019.

Speaking during the handing-over ceremony, Na’Allah asked the management and staff of UniAbuja to support the acting VC with their loyalty.

The acting VC commended her predecessor, whom she said laid a solid foundation at the university.

“I am honoured to accept this role and to build upon the outstanding work of my predecessor, whose leadership has guided us to many significant milestones,” she said.

“I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Professor Abdulrasheed Na’Allah, whose leadership and vision have guided us to where we stand today.

“Your tireless dedication and unwavering commitment to the university have laid a solid foundation for us to build upon, and for that, we are eternally grateful.

“Our university is a beacon of knowledge, innovation, and community engagement. Each member of our family, from faculty and staff to students and alumni, play an essential role in sustaining and enhancing our vision. Together, we have cultivated an environment that fosters intellectual growth, creative exploration, and the pursuit of excellence.”

She announced that the governing council of the university would be inaugurated on Thursday.

“I believe that this development would bring an end to the impasse we are experiencing. With the governing council in place, I am confident that we will see a return to normalcy, allowing us to focus on our primary mission of education and research,” the acting VC said.
