Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Atiku Abubakar have met in Abeokuta, Ogun state.

Abubakar served as vice-president under Obasanjo between 1999 to 2007.

Paul Ibe, Abubakar’s media adviser who confirmed the meeting to TheCable, said both politicians met on Monday afternoon.

Abubakar was accompanied to the meeting by
Liyel Imoke, former governor of Cross River state,
Aminu Tambuwal, ex-governor of Sokoto state, and Abdul Ningi, senator representing Bauchi central.

A source informed TheCable that the meeting is connected to ongoing coalition discussions ahead of the 2027 general election.

“The meeting is related to the coalition talks,” the source said.

Abubakar, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) standard-bearer in the 2023 election, has been actively advocating for coalition talks in recent weeks.

In November 2023, Atiku urged opposition parties in the country to form a coalition, adding that Nigeria needs a strong opposition to stop the All Progressives Congress (APC) from “turning” the country into a one-party state.
