The 2022 Commonwealth Games have kicked off with a vibrant show of fireworks and cultural parades from all the participating countries.
It was an elaborate fanfare at the Alexandra Stadium in Birmingham, England, on Thursday evening, when the queen’s relay baton signalled the beginning of the 22nd edition of the games.
Dignitaries at the opening ceremony included Prince Charles and Malala Yousafzai, Nobel laureate, among others.
The games begin on Friday and more than 5,000 athletes representing 72 nations and territories will compete in 280 medal events until August 8.
