PHOTOS: Niger state receives 200 tractors to boost farming

The Niger state government says it has received another batch of 200 tractors from John Deere, an American company.

The tractors were donated to the state in preparation for dry-season farming.

In a statement on Monday, Bologi Ibrahim, the chief press secretary (CPS) to the governor of Niger state, said the government would increase its farming capacity from 250,000 hectares during the rainy season.

Ibrahim added that the state government has purchased some seedlings to be cultivated during the dry season, including rice, maize, millet, sorghum, and beans.

In an interview, Umar Bago, the governor of Niger, said the state had received the first batch of 300 tractors and is expecting an additional 700.

The state is expected to produce one million tonnes of grains during the dry season.
