Olufemi Oluyede, a major general, has taken over as the acting chief of army staff (COAS) in a formal ceremony.
Oluyede will serve in the position pending the return of Taoreed Lagbaja, the substantive COAS, from his medical leave.
Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to the president on information and strategy, announced his appointment in a statement on Wednesday.
Speaking at the event, Christopher Musa, the chief of defence staff (CDS), said the appointment was necessary for continuity purposes.

“The president decided to appoint an acting chief of army staff so that there would be continuity. We cannot afford to playback and allow insecurity to continue to prevail,” he said.
“It is important that we all understand this clearly and clearly and give the acting chief of army staff all the support to make sure he is successful.”
