PHOTOS: Paris Olympics kicks off with opening ceremony on River Seine

The 2024 Paris Olympics officially began with an opening ceremony held on the River Seine in the heart of the city.

The opening ceremony took place on Friday, with athletes of participating countries on colourful boats across the body of water to the cheers of a sizeable crowd at the river bank.

The display was historic, as it marked the first time an Olympic opening ceremony would be held outside a stadium.

Almost 100 boats ferried over 10,000 athletes during the parade of diverse cultures and artistic expressions.

Lady Gaga, the American pop star, and Aya Nakamura, a Malian-French singer, provided warmth with their musical performances on the rainy evening.

Nigerian contingents, led by Tobi Amusan and Anuoluwapo Opeyori, the country’s flagbearers, were ecstatic in tie-dye patterned caftans as their boat bobbed over the river.

Team Nigeria will be represented by 86 athletes participating in 12 sports.
