PHOTOS: Residents displaced, properties destroyed as flood hits Bayelsa community

Residents of Ovom community in Yenagoa LGA, Bayelsa state, have been displaced following flooding in the area.

When TheCable visited the community on Tuesday evening, it was observed that water had taken over many houses and property, leaving residents stranded.

Some of the residents have also moved to makeshift accommodations in other parts of the state.

Speaking with TheCable, Emmanuel Peremobowei, a resident, said he had moved his belongings out of this community to prevent water from destroying them.

Peremobowei also appealed to the Bayelsa government to support the flood victims.

“This flood started about a week ago. We did not expect that the water would come to this level. We thought it would be normal rainfall without negative environmental effects,” he said.

“As you can see, some people are now taking their loads to another place to minimise the destruction. We are facing many challenges over this flooding. Different reptiles are even moving around in the water.”

Uwem Simeon, another resident, said the flood has negatively affected her business and caused her leg infection.

“Since the beginning of this flood, I have been entering this water to pack out my belongings bit by bit,” she said.

“As a result of this flood, my leg has been infected with something I don’t know about.”
