PHOTOS: Shade Fagorusi, Nigerian artist, dazzles with ‘A Million Stitches’ exhibition

Shade Fagorusi, a Nigerian artist, has held a solo exhibition of hand-stitched embroidery tagged ‘A Million Stitches’ at the National Museum in Lagos state.

The exhibition, which took place from November 26 to 30, was curated by Matthew Oyedele.

According to Oyedele, A Million Stitches is a journey through the intricate tapestry of human endeavour, a solo exhibition that delves into the beauty and complexity of relentless dedication.

“This exhibition brings together works of different moods and perspectives created between 2020 and 2023, all united by a common thread—the metaphorical million stitches that define their respective paths,” Oyedele said.

Shade Fagorusi is a contemporary Nigerian artist whose practice is inspired by her passion for documentation. Her love for fabrics and yarns was kindled by two of her childhood neighbours, one a local cloth weaver (aso-oke) and the other a wool cardigan weaver.

Fascinated by the process through which strands of thread and knitting yarns metamorphose into decorative, colourful domestic and commercial items, Shade proceeded to study art at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, and graduated in 2012.
